NY Times Explores Outrigger Paddling

The New York Times follows NYO as they train for the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge.

With its long cultural ties to the Pacific region, outrigger canoe paddling is not something most New Yorkers think of when contemplating their city’s waterways. And yet for the past 18 years, visitors to Manhattan’s Hudson River Park have found outrigger canoes traveling along the city’s shores.

Recently, videographers from the New York Times followed NYO’s mixed gender team “Big Apple Ohana” as they trained for the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge, a canoe race hosted by New York Outrigger and considered one of the world’s most prestigious international outrigger events.

Hi there- I saw on the Healthy on the Hudson website that there was a free paddling session on June 28th starting at 6:30, but I cannot find any other information on it. Is that still on the schedule? I would love to come after work one day. I also requested to join the Novice Paddling Meetup page, but those meet ups look like they are all scheduled for upcoming Sundays.
