NYO Member since 2007. Paddling since 2007.
Jason “diaper ninja” Ng is not a paddler. Despite growing up in Hawaii, the lanky kid never set foot in an outrigger canoe, and squandered every athletic exertion on solely land-based endurance sports.
Ages later and ironically far from home, on the shores of a very different island, a homesick whim led him to an unlikely date with the Hudson River, a rainy New York Outrigger novice session, and a belated welcome to the ancient Polynesian culture of paddling.
With utterly zero background in the sport, his newfound NYO ohana encouraged and mentored his growth, allowing him to challenge his personal limits and pain thresholds in a uniquely team-oriented environment, and eventually compete in delightfully sadistic OC6 race events across the country and beyond, from Toronto to Florida to Hawaii. It is that exceptionally refreshing and continual process of personal growth, at every stage of skill and fitness level, regardless of age or size or background, which inspires Jason to share the experience and spirit of outrigger canoeing with other enthused city dwellers eager to break out of the concrete jungle and explore their personal boundaries on NYC’s most untapped playground.
