Urban Outrigger Canoeing

Directors of the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge were invited to NBC New York to spread the word about the unique features of the race.

Head Coach Keith Tsang speaks with Roseanne Colletti to discuss the origins of outrigger canoe paddling, its spread around the world and the unique urban features of paddling in New York Harbor.

The 2014 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge on June 21 will feature over 400 athletes from around the world. The largest outrigger event on the East Coast and one of the largest sporting events in New York Harbor will be the 18th Liberty Challenge organized and hosted by New York Outrigger. Canoes launch from Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 to start a challenging 15-mile course encompassing the East River, New York Harbor and the Hudson River past iconic elements of the New York skyline including the World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge an the Statue of Liberty.

Spectators and fans are welcome to join in on the festivities at Pier 26 where island entertainment provided by Hawaiian Airlines and Halawai may be enjoyed on stage. Relax at the The Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard Food Truck Hui and grab a meal and drink from a collection of New York City’s greatest food trucks. Paddle an outrigger canoe as New York Outrigger hosts its popular novice sessions and stop by the Family Tent where children of all ages can learn a little more about Polynesian culture.
